Trophy Trout Fishing on the Gunnison River

Our on-site fly shop Black Canyon Anglers is recognized as the largest and most experienced outfitter operating in the Black Canyon and offers the only fishing lodge on the Gunnison River.

A float through the steep walled Gunnison Gorge is recognized as one of the top fly fishing trips in the lower 48. This National Conservation Area lies just downstream of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and features spectacular scenery, interesting geology, sightings of varied wildlife, and most importantly excellent fly fishing for rainbow and brown trout. Trophy rainbows measuring 20”+ are the prize of the “Gunny”.

These unparalleled 1, 2, or 3 day wilderness fishing adventures are conducted at the highest level of professionalism with top quality equipment and experienced personnel. The Colorado Department of Wildlife routinely conducts fish shocking surveys that show the Gunnison River to hold more fish per mile than any other river in the state. The 2008 data showed 8,779 fish per mile. The fishing float season extends from mid May through the beginning of October.

The occasional sighting of big horn sheep, mule deer, river otters, and eagles will heighten your appreciation of this unique resource.

Float Fishing and Wading Trips

Float fishing “The Gunny Gorge” is BCA’s signature trip. Several class II and III rapids are encountered during this 14 mile stretch—providing both fantastic fly fishing and exciting whitewater. Multi-day trips are slower paced with time for fishing afoot; single day trips move consistently with the majority of time spent fishing from the boat.

BCA is proud to be the most respected guide service on the Gunnison River. Seasoned guides and quality equipment—paired with tailored customer service and attention to detail—results in a long list of satisfied clients.

Stocked Ponds and Private River

The ponds at Gunnison River Farms entice guests to splash in for a refreshing dip, fish along the banks, or stroll leisurely along the grassy fields surrounding them. With the sheer cliff walls of the lower canyon as a backdrop, the ponds are a stunning place to relax, gather and refresh. Originally three separate ponds, we have made a small stream to create water flow from the irrigation canal through the ponds to ensure fresh river water circulating for the trout we stock annually.

With a floating dock for lounging on or jumping off of, a six-foot diving platform, and floating toys, kids will naturally gravitate toward this playful area. For the fisherman, the ponds are the perfect place to perfect fly fishing casts with a seasoned guide and catch that first fish.
